Coastal Zone Management Act

The Coastal Zone Management Act(CZMA) was passed in 1972 to conserve our nation's coastal and estuarine resources. It provides a framework for management of our coastal areas while providing guidance and funding to individual state programs. The National Estuarine Research Reserve System (NERRS) was established under the CZMA to set aside designated areas for long-term protection and to conduct education and research critical to the management and conservation of these sites.

One of NERRA's priorities is to reauthorize the CZMA and to ensure that the needs of the NERRS are being addressed. To learn more, please read our policy statement and testimony on CZMA legislation.
