Integrated Ocean Observing System

The Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS) offers tremendous benefits—including mitigating coastal hazards, enhancing national security, improving ocean health, providing for the sustainable use of ocean and coastal resources, and educating the public about the role and importance of oceans in our daily lives. The IOOS will improve our ability to convey data streams and environmental information to fishermen, beachgoers, school children, coastal resource managers, public health officials, and others.

As an established network of protected areas that support programs in estuarine monitoring, data management, and coastal education, the NERRS plays an integral role in the implementation of the IOOS. The water quality and weather monitoring components of the NERRS System-wide Monitoring Program have been recognized as a key element of the IOOS, and the NERRS is currently developing and testing near-real time data delivery systems and products.

NERRA supports legislation that would establish the IOOS and adequate and stable funding. To learn more, please read our policy statement and testimony on ocean and coastal observing.
