NERRA Projects

Marine Protected Areas Outreach

NOAA’s Marine Protected Areas (MPA) Center, with the support and coordination of NERRA, conducted an MPA education and outreach project. Through NERRA’s support, the MPA Center held a series of regional workshops in 2001 and 2002 targeting marine and coastal educators from federal, state and local agencies, non-governmental organizations, aquaria, science museums, and similar institutions. The workshops were designed to:
  • Increase awareness and understanding of MPA issues.
  • Promote the inclusion of MPA themes and messages in marine and coastal education programs.
  • Foster development of inter-agency education partnerships.
  • Solicit recommendations from educators about additional support the MPA Center could provide to them.
NERRA also provided support for the MPA Center’s monthly electronic newsletter, Information Exchange for Marine Educators, to support place-based educators. The newsletter includes information about educational programs and activities, professional development opportunities, and funding resources. Educators can find information about educational programs, which they can then adapt to meet their needs.
