Coastal Program Managers Meetings
In March 2005 and 2006, NERRA assisted with the organization of the Annual NOAA Coastal Program Managers Meeting in Washington, DC, attended by managers of the National Estuarine Research Reserves, Coastal Programs, and other coastal and ocean professionals. The conference included programmatic sessions for the NERRS, coastal programs, and marine protected areas. Concurrent sessions were also held on progress toward developing the national system of marine protected areas, social science tools for coastal managers, the Integrated Ocean Observing System, and coastal land conservation.
International Marine Protected Area Workshops
NERRA has also helped with the coordination of the International Marine Protected Area (MPA) Workshops, held in conjunction with the biennial Coastal Zone Conferences. The most recent workshop was held in July 2005 in New Orleans, LA. The workshop served as a starting point for discussions on regional and international collaboration for development of strategies for MPAs and marine resources. The objectives of the workshop were to discuss emerging issues about development of networks of MPAs, to develop solutions and approaches to address these issues, and to prepare leaders for the anticipated changes in global policies concerning MPA issues. The meeting served as a forum for scientists, governmental officials, non-governmental organizations, industry, and others to share and exchange knowledge, information, and technology, as well as to consider a strategy to establish networks and collaborative activites. |
