The House Estuaries Caucus convened its third briefing on July 20th to receive information from the private sector and industry on the value of estuaries to business, jobs, and economic development.

Two individuals from New Jersey Representative Frank LoBiondo’s district—home of the Jacques Cousteau Reserve and the Delaware National Estuary Program—presented information on how these programs contribute to the sustainability of the shellfish aquaculture industry. Brian Harman and Peter Hughes of the Atlantic Capes Fisheries company described the importance of good water and habitat quality to their aquaculture business and the role that the National Estuarine Research Reserve System and the National Estuary Program play in protecting and conserving estuaries.

The briefing was well attended with standing room only; a fourth briefing is planned for October 2017 and will focus on living shorelines.
