After three days of government shutdown, Congress passed a continuing resolution (CR) on January 22nd, keeping the government open and funded at roughly FY17 levels until February 8, 2018. The intention of the CR is to allow the government to stay open while House and Senate appropriators and leadership hammer out final FY18 funding for NOAA—and everything else—by that deadline or pass another budget extension resolution.
In January, NERRA President Lisa Auermuller and Executive Director Rebecca Roth were on Capitol Hill and at NOAA’s offices. They met with staff from appropriations committees, the Congressional Estuaries Caucus, and Senate and House offices. They also met with Rear Admiral Tim Gallaudet, Ph.D., USN Ret., the Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere, and Russell Callender, PhD., NOAA’s National Ocean Service Assistant Administrator. Both Admiral Gallaudet and Dr. Callender are familiar with the work done at the NERRS. They both expressed sincere interest in visiting all 29 reserves.
