The House Estuary Caucus held its inaugural event on March 30th. Congressman Posey (FL)—with help from Reps LoBiondo (NJ), Bonamici (OR), and Larsen (WA)—led House efforts to establish this caucus as a forum to discuss estuary issues facing the nation. In a briefing room packed with congressional staffers, a panel of representatives from federal agencies outlined their role in estuarine stewardship, restoration, and management. Erica Seiden from NOAA Office for Coastal Management gave a show stopper presentation on the work of Reserves. Thanks, Erica!
NERRA was on the hill in force. We met with Congressional staff from HI, ME, AL, and VA. Responses were very positive! They all noted how important it was to hear from folks in in their states about the value of the reserves and how much their “bosses” wanted to find time to visit reserves. We also met with Senate Authorizing Committee Staff from the Commerce Joint Subcommittee and national Non-Governmental Organizations, like The Nature Conservancy.
