California Fires

Our thoughts are with those affected by the recent fires in California, which have caused widespread destruction, displacement, and distress. We’re relieved that our Reserve colleagues are safe. In times like these, the work of our Reserves is all the more vital, as they not only protect the environment but also support the surrounding communities in many ways.

In Southern California, while the Los Angeles region battled devastating wildfires, multiple fires were contained in San Diego county. One, dubbed Border 2, in the Otay-Mountain range, erupted prompting evacuations only 20 miles from the Tijuana River Reserve. (Air quality coupled with ongoing water quality crises have been a focus for the Reserve.)

In Central California, the swift action of first responders to a fire at the Moss Landing Battery Storage Plant—near the Elkhorn Slough Reserve—likely saved lives. According to our friends at the Elkhorn Slough Foundation, “It’s still too soon to say what caused the fire or what environmental impacts will be felt immediately and in the long-term, but ongoing water and air quality monitoring efforts will continue at Elkhorn Slough, and we will report what the research team learns.”

We recognize the immense pressure our California colleagues have been under as they continue their work under such challenging circumstances. Their dedication and resilience are inspiring, and NERRA is here to support.
