Last week, NERRA and our Digital Coast Partners briefed congressional staff on the importance of delivering digital tools to our communities. Cirse Gonzalez, coastal training program coordinator at Virginia’s Chesapeake Bay Reserve, presented her Digital Coast Connects project at a Hill briefing for congressional staff. This project is bringing partners together to empower the state’s underserved, frontline coastal communities through knowledge exchange, narrative, and tools.
Congress has again extended its time to pass the FY 2024 budget for Commerce-Justice-Senate, which contains funding for the NERRS. We are hopeful Congress will pass the FY 2024 budget by their new deadline of March 8th. This means NERRA will continue to advocate for FY 2024 while also working with Senate and House appropriations committees and member offices as they begin preparing their budgets for FY 2025.
The Resilient Coasts and Estuaries Act introduced by Representatives Mike Levin (D-CA) and Brian Mast (R-FL) last month continues to gain support from the House of Representatives and now has ten co-sponsors! This bipartisan bill would reauthorize critical pieces of the Coastal Zone Management Act (CZMA), including the National Estuarine Research Reserve System (NERRS).
