The Reserve System, and the thousands who support it, is a constant force for positive change—and it’s growing. In support of this, NERRA’s request for the NERRS FY 2024 budget is $47M for operations (ORF) and $10M for PAC.
This request builds on FY 2023 budget, which is $32.5M for ORF and $8.5M for PAC (respectively a $2.8M and $2M increase over FY 2022). We need more in FY 2024 to support the addition of two new Reserves, one in Louisiana and one in Wisconsin, and to advance designation of a site in the U.S. Virgin Islands. This growth is consistent with the recent bipartisan House bill reauthorizing the NERRS (HR 7801 Levin/Mast). This budget will help every Reserve meet the demands placed on coastal communities and the nation in the face of climate change, while supporting that growth.
As the new Congress begins its work, it is more important than ever that we all work with our friends and partners around the country to ask that the NERRS budget grows to match the needs of our System, its programs, and our communities. Look for tips and tools on how we can do that collectively in mid-February.
In the meantime, plan to join us between February 10th and 14th on social media for I Heart Estuaries! Let our elected officials know how much love there is for estuaries and programs like the NERRS … #IHeartEstuaries!
