Just in! The House Natural Resources, Water, Wildlife and Fisheries Subcommittee has scheduled a June 27th hearing for the House bill to reauthorize the Coastal Zone Management Act (CZMA).

The Resilient Coasts and Estuaries Act bill (H.R. 6841) would update CZMA sections that pertain to the NERRS. It includes a suggested $47 million in NERRS funding and the codification of NERRS programs not currently in the CZMA, such as the Margaret A. Davidson Graduate Research Fellowship and the Centralized Data Management Office. The H.R. 6841 hearing is the first step in passing the bill before the 118th Congress ends Jan 3, 2025. The bill was introduced by Rep Mike Levin (CA-D) and Rep Brian Mast (FL-R) and has 17 cosponsors. Currently, the Senate does not have a companion bill.

The House Appropriations Subcommittee that handles the NERRS budget will put pen to paper on June 12th. If you have not already emailed your House of Representative Member, you have less than a week to do so! A short, simple email (really, that’s all they need) to encourage your congressional delegation to support NERRA’s request for the NERRS FY 2025 budget is all it takes to show your support at this critical time.

The Congressional Estuaries Caucus (CEC) is looking forward to an active summer and fall, thanks to CEC co-chairs, Representatives Suzanne Bonamici (OR), Bill Posey (FL), Rick Larsen (WA), and Brian Mast (FL)! A CEC site visit and briefing is in the works, with support from NERRA and our partners from Restore America’s Estuaries and the Association of National Estuary Programs.

Knowing that the NERRS will welcome two new Reserves in 2025, NERRA is working hard to be sure these sites are able to bring funding with them! Last month, NERRA traveled to DC to meet staff from congressional offices representing our soon-to-be Reserves in Louisiana and Wisconsin. Special thank you to NERRA Board Member and Atchafalaya Reserve Representative Brian Lezina for joining in the meetings with the Louisiana delegation.
