Green Bay Reserve

The Green Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, currently in the federal designation process, will encompass the waters and wetlands of the world’s largest freshwater estuary—a uniquely dynamic system within the Lake Michigan-Huron basin. Led by the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, the Reserve will bring together tribal nations, scientists, educators, and community partners to address regional ecosystem challenges and focus on freshwater science workforce development and pathways. Proposed programs include advancing research, education, stewardship, and training that support work on water quality, habitat restoration, changing water levels, and other emerging regional issues. With plans for a technologically advanced visitor and education center, the Reserve aims to serve K–12 learners, adult volunteers, and decision-makers while celebrating the cultural, ecological, and economic significance of the Bay of Green Bay.
